Runners used to avoid the gym for fear of "bulking up". We now know the opposite is true: well-targeted strength training makes you more economical, more durable and more resistant to injury — without adding meaningful mass.
Why it works
Two mechanisms do most of the heavy lifting:
- Improved economy. Stronger, stiffer tendons store and return more elastic energy with each stride, so you use less oxygen at the same pace.
- Greater durability. Stronger muscles and connective tissue tolerate the repetitive load of running, lowering injury risk through heavy training blocks.
The two sessions
You don't need much — two 30-minute sessions a week placed on or near your hard running days (so easy days stay easy).
- Heavy, low-rep compound lifts — squats, deadlifts, lunges and calf raises in the 3–6 rep range. Heavy enough to be challenging, never to failure.
- Plyometrics and stability — pogos, hops and single-leg work to build that springy, reactive stiffness that translates directly to stride.
What to skip
- Endless high-rep "toning" circuits — they fatigue without building strength.
- Machine isolation work that ignores how you actually move.
- Anything that leaves you too sore to run well the next day.
